Avis L. Sylvia, Ph.D.
DURHAM — Avis L. Sylvia, Ph.D., 73, died January 11, 2012, in Durham, surrounded by her mother and immediate family, after a long battle with cancer.
Sylvia was most recently a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at North Carolina State University. From 1974 to 1991, she worked in various capacities as both an instructor and researcher at Duke University, where she was awarded numerous grants and authored or co-authored more than 30 published papers on blood disease and the mechanisms of aging.
Born in Westerly, Rhode Island, she is survived by her mother, Muriel Sylvia, of Durham; sister, Brenda Autry and her husband, Robert, of Marco Island, Florida; sister, Una Briggs and her husband, Robert, of Joliet, Illinois; two nieces; and two nephews, their families; along with many close friends and former students who loved her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Duke Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina.
