Durham Plans Saturday Recycling Collection and Suspends Other Solid Waste Collections
Normal Collection Schedule Will Resume Next Week; Blue Week Recycling Customers to Receive Saturday Collection

DURHAM, N.C. - Due to this week's winter weather and continued icy road conditions in neighborhoods throughout Durham, the City's Solid Waste Management Department will collect blue week recycling customers this Saturday and resume normal collections for all other services on Monday.

Blue Week recycling customers who did not receive their curbside collection on their regular day this week are asked to place their carts on the curb by 6 a.m. on Saturday, February 21. Customers can determine their recycling collection schedule by visiting http://durhamnc.gov/ich/op/swmd/Pages/Recycling.aspx. On Monday, February 23, the department will resume its normal collections schedule for all curbside services. Customers should return their carts to the curb on their regular collection day next week.

According to Solid Waste Management Director Donald Long, the need to suspend collections for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday customers this week boils down to ensuring the safety for residents and City employees. "Safety is a top priority and the condition of many of the neighborhood streets throughout the city are still very icy," Long said. "We realize no one likes to see garbage piling up, and we do want to collect, but we want to do it safely. We plan to work on Saturday to collect recycling from our Blue Week customers since they won't receive collection again until the first week of March. Next week, we should be back on track for curbside collections. We really appreciate the patience of our customers as we all work to get back to normal after this week's winter weather."

The City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station) and Household Hazardous Waste Center are also now operating under their normal schedules. Any questions regarding solid waste collection schedule changes should be directed to Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200.
